    Who can apply?

    • At least 30 days of age and under age 45
    • A full-time student with proof of admission (or completing post-doctoral research) at a recognized learning institution, or the named spouse or child of an eligible student, living with them

    You must also fall into one of the following groups:

    • Temporarily living in Canada, while Canada is not your home country
    • Living in Canada and covered under a government health insurance plan (GHIP) for the entire time you study outside Canada
    • Living in Canada and covered under a government health insurance plan (GHIP) for the entire time you study in another province or territory

    Family coverage extends to your spouse and children at least 30 days of age, when you travel together and pay the family rate (2 times the rate for the oldest parent).

    Emergency medical benefits

    Hospital

    • Hospital expenses (semi-private room, ICU/coronary care), up to 60 days
    • Emergency psychiatric hospitalization, up to 30 days

    Outpatient services

    • Emergency department and outpatient treatment

    Health services

    • Physician services, including up to 5 follow-up visits
    • Paramedical services (physiotherapist, chiropractor, etc.), up to $70 per visit, $700 combined maximum
    • Psychiatric care with a licensed psychiatrist, up to $5,000 (including up to 5 outpatient follow-up visits)
    • Trauma counselling, up to 6 sessions within 90 days of the emergency
    • Private duty nursing, up to $10,000

    Medical appliances

    • Diagnostic tests requested by a physician for an emergency
    • Prescription drugs, up to a 30-day supply

    Dental services

    • Accidental dental injury (broken or knocked-out teeth), up to $2,500
    • Emergency pain relief, up to $100
    • Impacted wisdom tooth extraction, up to $250 per tooth

    Transportation

    • Ambulance services, up to $5,000
    • Expenses to take you home, up to $100,000
    • Family transportation allowance, up to $3,000 for travel and $1,500 for meals and accommodation
    • Expenses related to your death, up to $25,000

    Extras

    • Tuition reimbursement, up to $5,000 per semester
    • Pet care expenses, up to $50 a day (maximum $150 per trip)
    • Trip break — temporarily return home for up to 21 days during the school year without losing coverage

    Non-emergency medical benefits

    • Annual medical exam, up to $100 per year
    • Annual eye exam
    • Accidental death and dismemberment, up to $10,000

    What's not covered

    • Pre-existing conditions that were not stable in the 3 months before your effective date (applies to you, your spouse, and your children)
    • Any medical condition related to a birth defect, if the insured child is under age 2
