Sum insured and deductible: Both plans let you choose your sum insured (from $10,000 up to the plan maximum) and your deductible (from $0 automatic up to $10,000 CAD) at the time you apply. Premium and coverage depend on your age, trip length, destination, and your answers to the Medical Questionnaire, if applicable.
Stability period for pre-existing conditions
For Visitors to Canada, pre-existing medical conditions are covered as long as they were stable for 90 days (ages 59 and under), 120 days (60–69), 180 days (70–85), or 365 days (86 and over) before your policy's effective date. Basic Visitors to Canada does not cover pre-existing medical conditions.
Are you eligible for coverage?
At the time of application, you are not eligible for coverage if any of the following apply to you:
You are travelling against the advice of a physician or other registered medical practitioner
You have been diagnosed with a terminal condition
You are receiving palliative care, or palliative care has been recommended
You have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), including emphysema, requiring home oxygen
You have pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, or any cancer that has metastasized or required a bone marrow transplant
You have kidney disease requiring dialysis
You have had, or are waiting for, an organ transplant
You have been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, also known as pulmonary edema
For Basic Visitors to Canada only: you are 80 years of age or older at the time of application
Optional coverages
Unstable Pre-existing Medical Condition Coverage
For travellers 79 and under, this optional coverage extends protection to pre-existing medical conditions that were not stable, as long as the condition was stable in the 7 days before your policy's effective date. Available with Visitors to Canada only.
Sports & Activities Coverage
Adds coverage for higher-risk sports and activities such as backcountry skiing, scuba diving below 40 metres, rock climbing, and mountaineering, which are otherwise excluded from the Emergency Medical plan.
Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance
Pays a benefit in the event of accidental death or certain losses (such as loss of a limb or sight) resulting from an accident during your trip, in addition to your Emergency Medical Insurance.
Automatic extensions to coverage
Hospitalization — coverage extends for the remainder of your hospital stay, plus up to 7 days after release to recover and travel home
Medically unfit to travel — up to 7 days to recover and travel home, with written documentation from your attending physician
Delay of common carrier — up to 7 days if your flight, train, or other common carrier is delayed by circumstances beyond your control
Quarantine — up to 14 days if you're placed under quarantine after a positive COVID-19 test
Travel outside of Canada
Side-trips outside of Canada are permitted under both plans, as long as the majority of your period of coverage is spent in Canada and you travelled to Canada before taking any side-trips.
Visitors to Canada covers up to 48 hours of direct travel to and from Canada, plus side-trips outside of Canada — including visits to your country of permanent residence
Basic Visitors to Canada covers up to 48 hours of direct travel to and from Canada only
Direct travel includes any stopovers or layovers while in transit
Proof of all travel dates may be required if you submit a claim
If your side-trip lasts longer than expected
Your policy does not terminate, but expenses are not covered while you are travelling outside of Canada beyond what's permitted under your plan. Coverage resumes automatically once you return to Canada.
Refunds
If you cancel within 10 days of your application date, and no travel has taken place and your policy hasn't expired, you receive a full refund
If you cancel after the 10-day period but before your policy's effective date, a full refund is available
If you cancel after travel has taken place, a partial refund less an administration fee is available, calculated from the date of your cancellation request or your return date
Super Visa applicants have additional refund options if their application is denied, withdrawn, or their entry to Canada is refused
